Blog entry 11/18

I wasn't able to do my observation this week.  I had a bad cold/maybe flu, then took a sub teaching job for the rest of the week.  I'm taking off work next Monday and Tuesday to catch up.

Please comment here so you get credit and I'll be looking at your blog post, too. Do any of you work with special ed. kids? I'm wondering how that population is served before they get to public school. I don't see any special ed. kids in the Head Start programs I've seen.  I was just wondering where they go. Jim

  1. Hi Jim

Sorry to hear that you weren't able to get your observation in this week. But most special ed children are referred to the regional centers in their areas and the regional centers refer them out to agencies that cater to their disability. Sometimes the parent or the doctors who diagnose the child will tell the parent they can either mainstream them or keep them with a program geared towards their needs. But due to the budget cut, even though most schools limited their intake on special needs the majority of the funds given towards education was for special needs. So that made it more profitable and demanding for the agencies that specialized in special need to become more of a high demand. But good question because I haven't really been seeing too many special needs either.

  2. Hi Jim,

Hope that you are feeling better. I hope that you will be able to caught up. Jim there are several reasons why students are in special education such as emotional disturbance or learning disorders. I have a lot of experience of the IEP progress with special education students. Students aren't normally diagnosed during the preschool years. You may have worked with special education students before.

  3. Hi Jim,

I hope you are feeling better. I have a small feeling I will be my turn to do a blog post like this pretty soon because I get sick a lot during this time of the year.

Jim, in the school I work at, the Pre-school classroom only has one child with special needs. The child does have a adult assigned only to him what is called a "one on one." That person is supposed to stay with them through out their school years depending on how severe they are. Sometimes they can stay in a regular classroom but if the child have severe needs or has mental retardation then they are likely to place that child in a special education class.
